Over the years, a few films have established themselves as required viewing for anyone who has ever used cannabis products. Whether you use recreational marijuana, or you’re a medical marijuana patient, grab your snack of choice, sit back, and relax as you make your way through our five favorite cannabis-themed movies.
Title: Half Baked (1998)
Stars: Dave Chappelle, Harland Williams
What You Should Know: Thurgood has access to medical marijuana at his job in a pharmaceutical lab, so he and his friends decide to steal and sell it for money to bail their friend Kenny out of jail. Thurgood tries to elude the cops, bail his friend out of jail, and woo Mary Jane, the anti-cannabis daughter of a recreational drug dealer. There’s so much to love about this movie, from the zany plot to the cast that includes Tommy Chong, Willie Nelson, and many other icons.
Line That’ll Give You the Giggles: “I don’t do drugs, though. Just weed.”
Title: Up in Smoke (1978)
Stars: Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong
What You Should Know: The original “Cheech and Chong” movie, Up in Smoke is a cult classic for smokers everywhere. Cheech and Chong go on a road trip to pick up more weed, but they get themselves into some major misunderstandings along the way. This movie laid the foundation for all the other Cheech and Chong movies.
Line That’ll Give You the Giggles: “Hey man, how am I driving?”

Title: Fritz the Cat (1972)
Stars: Skip Hinnant, Rosetta LeNoire
What You Should Know: Fritz the Cat was based on Robert Crumb’s comic strip of the same name. The satirical film follows Fritz, an anthropomorphic cat, through 1960s New York City, exploring all the major social themes of the day, from politics to race relations. If you really love Fritz the Cat, you’ll want to check out the sequel, called The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat.
Line That’ll Give You the Giggles (or in this case, the Feels): “The love you give is equal to the love you get.”
Title: The Big Lebowski
Stars: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman
What You Should Know: The Dude is a cannabis-smoking, White Russian-drinking, avid bowler and slacker who just wants a new rug after some hired thugs break into his home and ruin it because they think he is someone else. This Coen Brothers directed romp features characters such as The Jesus (whom you don’t mess with), a gun-totting John Goodman, and a group of German nihilists featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.
Line That’ll Give You the Giggles: “I’m the Dude. So that’s what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.”

Stars: Ice Cube, Chris Tucker
What You Should Know: What seemed like a typical Friday afternoon of smoking recreational marijuana for Craig Jones and his best friend Smokey turns into something more when they realize drug dealer Big Worm wants payment for the cannabis Smokey should have been selling. Don’t forget Deebo, the neighborhood bully who is stalking around, looking for any cash and valuables he can get his hands on.
Line That’ll Give You the Giggles: “I know you don’t smoke weed, I know this, but I’m gonna get you high today, ’cause it’s Friday; you ain’t got no job… and you ain’t got [nothing] to do.”
