— USE RESPONSIBLY

It took years of hard work by lots of people to make cannabis legal in Oregon—first through medical, then recreational. Many people endured, sacrificed, and persevered to help make this change real.  But it’s a hard-won freedom that also comes with responsibility, and exists within a framework of laws that it’s important we always keep in mind.

What's Legal, OR?

The cute chart above can be found at whatslegaloregon.com, a service of the state of Oregon, which also has a handy FAQ that includes answers to such questions as “Where will the tax money go?” (40% goes to schools!). Those taxes start in January 2016, which is coming right up… but we’re still tax free till the end of December!

Speaking of schools, you’ll see that the very first point listed above concerns adult use, and that recreational cannabis use is limited to people 21 and older. Preventing the distribution of cannabis to minors is frequently cited as one of the most prominent concerns about legal cannabis—it is also the very first point mentioned in the Cole Memorandum, which is the federal guideline which describes the conditions under which state legalization is tolerated.

You may remember the anti-drug messages of your youth with varying degrees of credulity, but the Protect What’s Next campaign does a pretty good job of being savvy without being sappy, and might be of use when it’s time to have “the talk” with your own young person here in the age of legalization.

And finally, don’t forget this very Portland reference chart, created by our own Portland P.D.
